Why Orange? On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, she was tragically shot and killed in Chicago. To honor her memory, her friends chose to wear orange, the color hunters wear to protect themselves. Today, thousands wear orange every June to honor Hadiya and the over 40,000 people killed and 85,000 wounded by gun violence each year.
